Ruby in Paradise is a 1993 film about a young woman named Ruby Lee Gissing (Ashley Judd) who escapes her small town in Tennessee after her mother's death and starts anew in coastal Florida, where she finds a job at a souvenir store run by Mildred Chambers (Dorothy Lyman). As Ruby navigates her new life, she forms connections with the shop's owner and two men, Ricky and Mike, while trying to come to terms with her past. The film is an homage to Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, marked by its character study of a young woman struggling with self-discovery in a new environment.
