In 1937, Japan invades China, beginning the Second Sino-Japanese War. A Westerner, John Miller (Christian Bale), joins a group of desperate schoolgirls fleeing to the sanctuary of their convent at a Western-run Roman Catholic church in Nanjing. Pretending to be a priest, Miller tries to lead the women to safety while repairing the convent's truck to escape. The schoolgirls are joined by a group of flamboyant prostitutes who pose as "13 Flowers of Nanjing" to protect them from Japanese soldiers. With the help of Yu Mo (Ni Ni), one of the prostitutes, the group is able to escape the city, with Miller ultimately helping to save their lives.
