Le jour se lève is a 1939 French film directed by Marcel Carné and written by Jacques Prévert, based on a story by Jacques Viot. It's considered one of the principal examples of the French film movement known as poetic realism. The film follows François (Jean Gabin), who locks himself in his apartment after committing a murder, and then recounts the events that led him to that point. As he reminisces, Françoise (Jacqueline Laurent) is revealed to be Françoise's biological daughter, leading to a tragic confrontation with dog trainer Valentin (Jules Berry).
