Asphalt

Starring Betty Amann in her most famous leading role, Joe May's Asphalt is a luxuriously produced German Expressionist classic where tragic liaisons and fatal encounters are shaped alongside the constant roar of Berlin traffic. Young police sergeant Holk lives with his mother and father in a middle-class apartment. He serves as a traffic cop in a very lively and busy city where street crime is rampant, and he flirts with a woman in a convertible who violates the right of way at an intersection. A young woman seeks detailed advice from a jeweller before stealing a gemstone using a rigged umbrella, leading to Holk's arrest and encounter with her.
