In 1913, Oklahoma oil derrick owner Lena Doyle (Faye Dunaway) is stubbornly drilling for oil despite pressure from major oil companies to sell her land. She's aided by Noble "Mase" Mason (George C. Scott), a retired US Army captain who accepts a job offer despite the company's shady dealings. As Lena's estranged father Cleon Doyle (John Mills) shows up and offers help, they work together with Mason to outsmart the powerful oil company Pan Oklahoma Oil & Gas, led by ruthless Walter C. Hellman (Jack Palance).
