In 1920s Europe, Harry Haller (Max von Sydow), a solitary intellectual struggling with his dual nature, is rescued from his solipsism by mysterious Hermine (Dominique Sanda) and introduced to new experiences through her, including the hallucinatory world of the Magic Theater.
