Doctor Faustus

In this 1967 British horror film adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's 1588 play, Richard Burton stars as Doctor Faustus, a scholar who sells his soul to Lucifer in exchange for 24 years of living with Mephistopheles as his slave. Elizabeth Taylor appears in a silent role as Helen of Troy, while Andreas Teuber delivers a standout performance as the devilish Mephistopheles. The film is notable for its use of bizarre psychedelic effects and its status as the only theatrical film directed by Richard Burton or Nevill Coghill, who also played Faustus on stage at Oxford University in 1966.
