Calvaire

In a haunting and surreal descent into madness, "Calvaire" (2004) follows struggling singer Marc Stevens (Laurent Lucas), whose van breaks down in the remote woods of Liège, stranding him at a shuttered inn where he is taken in by enigmatic proprietor Mr. Bartel (Jackie Berroyer). As the night wears on and reality blurs, Marc finds himself subjected to sadistic games, psychological manipulation, and ultimately, a nightmarish descent into horror as he becomes the object of the villagers' twisted desire for revenge against his perceived transgression - that he has "returned" as Bartel's lost wife.
