A one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder, Clint Eastwood's character Mike Milo, takes on a job from his former boss Howard Polk to bring the man's young son home from Mexico after being kidnapped by his mother Leta. Set in 1979, this neo-Western drama follows their perilous journey across the border as they evade the authorities and confront the harsh realities of life on both sides of the law. Along the way, Mike teaches Rafo, a troubled teenager with a penchant for cockfights, about being "macho" and finds himself drawn into a complex web of loyalty, deception, and redemption.
