Mesmerized

In 1900s New Zealand, an 18-year-old orphaned girl marries a wealthy and older businessman, setting off a downward spiral of emotional and physical strain that affects those around them. With a calculated game of wits, she manipulates him into a toxic relationship, using hypnosis to control him as she poisons him with chloroform. When he dies, she's accused of murder, but ultimately acquitted due to lack of evidence, forcing her to flee with his brother and start anew in America, where her story was loosely based on a real-life crime and trial.
