Colonel Redl

The film "Colonel Redl" tells the story of Alfred Redl, an ambitious young officer who rises through the ranks to become head of the Secret Police, but ultimately becomes ensnared in political deception due to his secret attraction to men and his loyalty to the crown. As Redl climbs the ladder, he must navigate complex relationships with his friends and superiors, including a forbidden love for his friend's sister, Katalin. The screenplay loosely charts the rise of inter-ethnic tensions in Austro-Hungary, which were to bring about the assassination in Sarajevo and the empire's eventual disintegration.
