In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, Benjamin Martin, a French and Indian War veteran, is called to Charles Town to vote in the South Carolina General Assembly on a levy supporting the Continental Army. After his son Gabriel joins the army against his wishes, their home is disrupted by the arrival of British troops led by the ruthless Colonel William Tavington. The situation escalates when Tavington presses-gangs the Martins' African-American former slaves into the army and arrests Gabriel. Benjamin Martin and his sons ambush a British convoy transporting Gabriel, killing all but one of the soldiers and rescuing their son. With the help of French Major Jean Villeneuve, Benjamin joins forces with Colonel Harry Burwell to raise a militia unit and launch guerrilla warfare against the British, weakening Lord Cornwallis's regiments through ambushes, sabotage, and brutality.
