The Theory of Flight follows Richard, played by Kenneth Branagh, who builds homemade aircraft and crashes one, leading to his assignment as a public service worker caring for Jane Hatchard, played by Helena Bonham Carter, a young woman with motor neuron disease. As they form an unlikely friendship, Jane asks Richard to help her lose her virginity before her death, leading them on a series of misadventures involving a high-priced male gigolo and a bank robbery.
