In the midst of World War II's tumultuous years, a complex web of love and deception ensnares two women: Janine Fréjoul, a calculating and mercenary soul, and François Dupont, a bourgeois industrialist stuck in a loveless marriage. As their forbidden affair unfolds, Janine manipulates and exploits Dupont, but ultimately fails to grasp the one thing she truly desires - her husband Maurice back from war.
