The Lost Battalion

The Lost Battalion is a 2001 American war drama film based on the true story of the US 77th Division's Lost Battalion during World War I. The film follows Major Charles Whittlesey (Rick Schroder) and his men as they become trapped behind enemy lines in the Argonne Forest in October 1918, with only carrier pigeons to communicate with headquarters. Despite severe shortages and capture by German forces, the battalion holds their ground through fierce close-quarters combat, and ultimately leads to a breakthrough for American forces, resulting in the deaths of 353 of the 550 American troops involved.
