Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) is thriving with his newly rebuilt theater in Redshore City, where he and his group are struggling to impress an entertainment mogul, Jimmy Crystal. Buster travels to the city with his crew to make an impression, and after being denied entry into Crystal Entertainment, they sneak in for an audition. The gang pitches a ridiculous idea - casting Clay Calloway (Bono) in their show - and Buster embarks on a quest to find the isolated rock legend.
