Dustin Hoffman stars as Michael Dorsey / Dorothy Michaels, a struggling actor who disguises himself as a woman to land a job on a popular daytime soap opera. As "Dorothy," he becomes a national sensation and plays Emily Kimberly, a plausibly feminist character who surprises the crew with his ad-libbed speeches and actions. The film follows Michael's romantic entanglements with Julie Nichols, played by Jessica Lange, and Sandy Lester, played by Teri Garr, as well as his own internal conflict about maintaining the charade.
