Celestina (Irène Galter), a young and naive country girl from Castelluccio di Norcia, arrives in Rome to work as a maid, leaving her parents behind after they passed away. As she navigates this unfamiliar city, she makes friends with other Roman maids and becomes infatuated with Fernando Maestrelli (Gabriele Ferzetti), a handsome plumber who is already engaged to another woman. Celestina's life is marked by frequent job changes and romantic entanglements, but her desperation and determination ultimately lead her to make a choice that will change her fate forever.
