The story of Joseph, a middle-aged widower living in northern England, kills his dog, Bluey, in a drunken rage following a dispute with a local bookmaker. He immediately regrets the act and meets Hannah, a devout Christian and charity shop worker who prays with him, encouraging him to release his anger and seek peace. Their relationship develops to reveal that Hannah is hiding a secret of her own, which has devastating results on both of their lives. The film depicts an environment similar to what Joseph Manners witnessed growing up on a council estate in the Midlands, although the film is in no way autobiographical.
