In 1956 Kansas, a lonely and depressed high-school Latin teacher, Evelyn Wyckoff, struggles to come to grips with her sexuality and emotions after an abusive sexual relationship with a young black janitor forces itself upon her, leading to public ostracism and ultimately, a new life. Based on the 1970 novel of the same title by William Inge, this drama film explores themes of spinsterhood, racism, sexual tension, and public humiliation during the late 1950s.
