Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) is a struggling attorney who volunteers as a high-school wrestling coach and takes on the guardianship of elderly client Leo Poplar in an attempt to keep his practice afloat. When Leo's troubled grandson Kyle shows up from Ohio, Mike lets him stay with him instead of returning him to his mother, leading to unexpected benefits for everyone involved.
