In 1954 Scotland, a shiftless young drifter named Joe Taylor works on a coal barge operating from Glasgow along the River Clyde and its canals. As he navigates his life of solitude, Joe's encounters with a dead woman, Cathy Dimly, found naked in the river, force him to confront the darker aspects of human connection and desire. With an intimate and unflinching gaze, the film explores themes of love, loss, and betrayal through Joe's complex relationships with those around him, including his employers, Les and Ella Gault, and their young son Jim, all while hiding secrets about Cathy that threaten to upend his fragile existence.
