In a powerful and poignant exploration of racial segregation and its devastating effects on South African society, "Cry, the Beloved Country" (1951) follows minister Stephen Kumalo's journey to Johannesburg in search of his missing son, only to discover him living in poverty-stricken squalor as a thief and murderer. With the help of fellow minister Reverend Msimangu, Kumalo confronts the harsh realities of apartheid and its impact on individuals and communities. The film is based on the novel by Alan Paton and directed by Zoltán Korda, starring Sidney Poitier in his last major film role.
