After a tragedy, a desperate mother in rural east Texas takes in a blind boarder and enlists the help of a questionable black drifter to make ends meet, with the possibility of a cotton crop. Places in the Heart (1984) is a quiet character piece with grand ambitions that it more than fulfills, thanks to absorbing work from writer-director Robert Benton and a tremendous cast.
