In 1183, King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) seeks to name a successor and summons his family for Christmas at his castle in Chinon, Touraine. His estranged wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), favours their eldest surviving son, Richard, while Henry wants his youngest son, John, to inherit the throne. The gathering unleashes complex schemes involving infidelity, royal succession, and treachery among the family members, including a scorned Eleanor, her son Richard's secret affair with Philip II of France's half-sister Alais, and a plot by Geoffrey II to manipulate Henry towards his own claim.
