There Is No Evil

"There Is No Evil" is a 2020 Persian-language drama film that tells four stories about ordinary people navigating complicity, conscience, resistance, and moral responsibility when faced with or forced into state-sanctioned execution in Iran's strict legal system. The film explores different relationships to capital punishment through the characters of Heshmat (Ehsan Mirhosseini), Pouya (Kaveh Ahangar) who tries to steal a rifle to escape his military service, Javad (Mohammad Valizadegan) who plans to propose to his girlfriend Nana at her birthday party, and Darya (Baran Rasoulof) whose uncle Bahram (Mohammad Seddighimehr) is terminally ill and reveals he had to disband his family for their safety after escaping an order to execute a prisoner.
