In this 1969 American-German drama film, directed by Cy Endfield, a middle-aged Marquis de Sade recounts his life out of sequence, haunted by his past debauchery and terrorized by his uncle, the Abbé. The film is characterized by its psychedelic imagery and go-go sensibilities, as the dying Marquis relives memories of his sadomasochistic experiments, including orgies with young prostitutes and a series of flashbacks to his childhood and adulthood, leading up to a mock trial where he is accused of murdering one of his lovers.
