The Greatest Beer Run Ever

In 1967, Marine Corps veteran John "Chickie" Donohue (Zac Efron) is a slacking merchant seaman who lives with his family in Inwood, New York City. His sister Christine is strongly opposed to the Vietnam War. Chickie and his friends attend the funeral of an old friend that has been killed in action, and are informed that another close friend, Tommy, has gone missing in action. Chickie decides to deliver beers to them in South Vietnam using a duffle bag full of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. He encounters the cynical journalist Arthur Coates (Russell Crowe) before embarking on his trek, and with the help of Military police officer Tommy Collins, he travels to LZ Jane via Bien Hoa Air Base and Da Nang Air Base searching for Rick Duggan, serving in the 1st Cavalry Division. Along the way, Chickie passes beers out to his friends, but also witnesses harsh realities of war, including enemy fire and a prisoner's brutal interrogation. He eventually reaches Saigon, where he learns his ship has sailed for the Philippines due to warnings of an impending attack. After surviving a surprise Tet Offensive in Saigon, Chickie returns home with a changed perspective on the war, sharing his last beer with his sister Christine among tributes for soldiers.
