In 1950s England, sailor Harold Guppy arrives in a small seaside town looking for his estranged brother, only to find himself entangled in a tangled web of relationships with the seemingly respectable but hypocritical residents of the local household. When he rents a room from Marjorie Beasley and her meek husband, he embarks on a clandestine affair that is soon complicated by the arrival of Marjorie's teenage daughter, Joyce, who develops an unhealthy obsession with Harold. As the trio becomes increasingly entangled in a love triangle, their relationships descend into chaos, ultimately leading to a tragic confrontation that shocks and disturbs all parties involved.
