In 1957 Brighton and their seaside town home in Peacehaven, Tom Burgess' life is turned upside down by the return of his former lover, Patrick, now an elderly invalid, to whom he was forced to marry due to societal pressures. Through old journals, we see the passionate relationship between Tom and Patrick in secret, as they navigate the law's criminalization of homosexuality. Years later, their story resurfaces when Marion, still married to Tom, discovers a long-buried truth about his past, forcing her to confront her own feelings of love, guilt, and betrayal, ultimately leading to a poignant exploration of what it means to be true to oneself.
