A middle-class housewife on Long Island (Shirley Knight) needs to get away and so enters her station wagon and drives west. To where? She doesn’t know, but she picks up an ex-college football player, Jimmy "Killer" Kilgannon (James Caan), before meeting a motorcycle cop, Gordon (Robert Duvall). The story centers on Natalie Ravenna, a housewife who runs away from her husband after learning she is pregnant.
