My Uncle

In this 1958 French-language comedy film, Monsieur Hulot, a lovable but socially awkward man, is thrilled to spend time at his sister's modernist nightmare of a home in the suburbs of Paris. The ultra-modern Villa Arpel is an environment designed more for superficial aesthetics and electrical gadgets than daily living, driving its occupants M. and Mme. Arpel into monotony. In contrast, Hulot's old city apartment is where he finds freedom and joy with his rambunctious young nephew Gérard, leading the Arpels to scheme against Hulot's carefree nature.
