Two lifelong friends, Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) and Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel), bond while vacationing in a luxury Swiss Alps lodge, reflecting on their lives as they ponder retirement. Fred, a retired composer, is approached by an emissary for Queen Elizabeth II to perform his popular piece "Simple Song #3" at Prince Philip's birthday concert. Meanwhile, Mick, a film director, works with writers to develop his latest screenplay, which he calls his "testament." The hotel is inhabited by quirky individuals, including a young masseuse, a fake Diego Maradona, and Miss Universe.
