Gloomy Sunday

In 1930s Budapest, restaurant owner László Szabó and beautiful waitress Ilona hire a young pianist András to play in their restaurant. András falls in love with Ilona, who also sleeps with László, inspiring András to write "Gloomy Sunday" for her birthday. As the song becomes popular, it triggers a chain of suicides, causing grief and tension among the trio. Meanwhile, German businessman Hans Wieck returns to Budapest as an SS officer responsible for deporting Jews, but secretly saves some wealthy Jews in exchange for bribes. The film's story is framed by Hans' 80th birthday dinner at his favorite restaurant, where he collapses while listening to "Gloomy Sunday".
