Greta Scacchi stars as George McEwan, a passionate lover who recounts her long-term relationship with Vincent D'Onofrio's Gavin McCall in flashback. Their romance spans over 30 years, beginning in the 1950s when George, a young woman living in France, meets Gavin, a humble Scottish fisherman, while helping locals take in the straw during her summer vacation. The two begin a torrid affair, despite their cultural and lifestyle differences, and continue to see each other through the years, loving each other despite their differences.
