Eight-year-old Ana navigates her troubled childhood after witnessing her father's infidelity and subsequent death, which she believes was caused by his cruelty. As she mourns her mother, who had passed away of cancer, Ana imagines a complex web of memories, desires, and tragedies. Her relationship with her aunt Paulina, a stern guardian, contrasts with the warmth and imagination of her deceased mother, María, played by Geraldine Chaplin in dual roles as young Ana's mother and older Ana.
