In 1988 Newcastle, a high school PE teacher struggles to balance her secret life as a lesbian with her demanding job and societal expectations. As her girlfriend's growing sense of unease threatens to expose their relationship, Jean finds herself caught in a web of fear, loyalty, and identity. Told with sensitivity and nuance, the film explores themes of homophobia, conservatism, and gender roles set against the backdrop of Thatcherism and the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in 1980s Britain.
