In 1930s Georgia, Miss Amelia (Vanessa Redgrave) is a lonely, eccentric moonshiner who dominates her small farming community. A long-lost cousin, Cousin Lymon (Cork Hubbert), arrives and convinces Amelia to turn her business operation into a café for the locals. Meanwhile, her ex-husband Marvin Macy (Keith Carradine) returns to town after being released from prison, sparking jealousy in Amelia. The film follows their complicated relationships as they grow closer to each other, culminating in a violent public fight between Marvin and Amelia at her café.
