The Lower Depths

In "The Lower Depths," Jean Gabin stars as Wasska Pepel, a young thief living in a Parisian flophouse under the harsh treatment of landlord Kostyleva (Suzy Prim). The film follows Pepel's complicated love life and friendships with Vassilissa, the landlord's wife, her sister Nastia, and a former nobleman, Baron Lebaron (Louis Jouvet), who becomes his unlikely friend. As tensions rise between the baron and Pepel, the story shifts to reveal the harsh realities of life in the slums, ultimately leading to a dramatic confrontation with the authorities and a new path forward for Natasha, Nastia's sister.
