Gaetano (Massimo Troisi), a young Neapolitan, decides to leave home and friends to explore life and meet new people. He sets out on an autostop journey to Florence, where he meets Marta (Fiorenza Marchegiani) and falls in love. However, when Marta reveals she's pregnant, Gaetano is unsure if he's the father, leading him to return to Naples for his sister's wedding, only to ultimately reunite with Marta and accept her child.
