The Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine

"The Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine" is a 2018 Japanese film about two female sumo athletes, Kiku (Mai Kiryu) and Tokachi (Hanae Kan), who form an unlikely connection with an anarchist group called the Guillotine Society in post-1923 Great Kanto Earthquake Japan. As they navigate their lives, Tomoyo Hanagiku (Mai Kiryu) joins a women's sumo group to escape her abusive husband and tour the country by performing, forming bonds with fellow activists.
