In 1957, Tara Maguire (Robin Wright), a young and resolute woman, scandalizes her provincial Irish village by having a baby out of wedlock and refusing to name the father, Sergeant Brendan Hegarty (Albert Finney). As the local police officer tries to win her hand in marriage, Tara falls in love with Tom Casey (Aidan Quinn), one of the "Playboys", a traveling troupe of actors who arrive in the village.
