June Allyson plays Irene Bullock, who encounters bedraggled Godfrey (David Niven) at the docks and, noticing his good manners, hires him as their family's butler, despite his obvious wealth. He proves a success, but keeps his past to himself. When an old flame turns up for Irene's sister Cordelia, she starts making waves.
