In Montana, 1887, a shootist finds sanctuary with a widow and her son, who happen to belong to a Plain People sect. The film meshes ideas from Western classics like "Angel and the Badman," "Shane," "Witness," and "The Scarlet Letter" and is on par with the best of them in its own unique way, evoking a reverent and beautiful vibe reminiscent of "The Last of the Mohicans." As a romance brews between Rebecca Yoder and wounded outlaw Johnny Gault, it puts her standing among her devout neighbors in jeopardy.
