In 1966, George Roy Hill directed an epic drama that would become a box-office success despite mixed reviews. Based on James A. Michener's novel, the film tells the story of Reverend Abner Hale, a Calvinist missionary from New England who marries a beautiful young woman, Jerusha Bromley, and takes her to 19th-century Hawaii as part of a mission to convert the native population. The clash between their rigidly Christian values and the island's rich cultural traditions ultimately leads to tragedy.
