After striking it rich on a large gold strike, Gene Hackman's character Jack McCann retires to a quiet life on a Caribbean island, but ends up coping with an alcoholic wife, Jane Lapotaire, and Miami mobsters who want to build a casino. The film follows the life of a wealthy man facing threats from his daughter Theresa Russell and her social-climbing husband Rutger Hauer, as well as Mickey Rourke's character Aurelio D'Amato, a mobster trying to usurp the island he owns.
