Alexander Nevsky

Alexander Nevsky, directed by Sergei Eisenstein, depicts the attempted invasion of Novgorod in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights of the Holy Roman Empire and their defeat by Prince Alexander, known popularly as Alexander Nevsky (Nikolai Cherkasov), a folk hero who rallies his people to resist the formidable force. The film features a subplot involving two warriors, Vasili Buslai (Nikolay Okhlopkov) and Gavrilo Oleksich (Andrei Abrikosov), who engage in a contest of bravery to win the hand of a local maiden, Olga Danilovna (Valentina Ivashova).
