In 1984 New Zealand, an 11-year-old boy lives on a small farm with his grandmother and younger brother Rocky, dreaming of Michael Jackson and making up stories about his absent father. When Rocky's grandmother leaves for a funeral, Boy is surprised to see his father Alamein return, thinking he's come to take them away, but it turns out Alamein has arrived to find the buried money from before his incarceration. As Boy navigates this unexpected reunion, he learns harsh truths about his father and himself, confronting the reality that their happy memories are make-believe and that Alamein struggles with controlling his anger.
