In summer 1945, Tadeusz (Marcin Dorociński) moves to Masuria, a region in former German East Prussia, where he visits Róża (Agata Kulesza), a widow of a German Wehrmacht soldier whose death he witnessed during the Warsaw uprising. She invites him to stay at her farm to protect her against marauders and other threats, and from this partnership, respect and love slowly arise. As Tadeusz tries to help Róża navigate her new identity as a Polish citizen, they face unwelcome attention from Soviet authorities who view her as a German.
