West Is West

In 1976, Sajid, the youngest Khan child, is sent to Pakistan by his father George to "sort him out" amidst a pubescent crisis triggered by both his father's tyrannical insistence on Pakistani tradition and bullying in school. In this last-ditch attempt, George hopes to show his son life in their native land is better, but upon arrival, he discovers no family will give their daughter away due to fears of abandonment like his own past actions. Sajid eventually finds solace with a local boy Zaid who teaches him Pakistani culture, and meets Neelam, a Pakistani woman born in Rochdale who bears a striking resemblance to his father's favorite singer Nana Mouskouri. As George begins to appreciate Ella as a wife who stood by him during hard times, the film ends with Sajid finally proud of his Asian background, while George's chippy now serves Pakistani-style kebabs referred to as "The Charlotte Rampling special".
